Nested Weighted Limit-Average Automata of Bounded Width

چکیده
While weighted automata provide a natural framework to express quantitative properties, many basic properties like average response time cannot be expressed with weighted automata. Nested weighted automata extend weighted automata and consist of a master automaton and a set of slave automata that are invoked by the master automaton. Nested weighted automata are strictly more expressive than weighted automata (e.g., average response time can be expressed with nested weighted automata), but the basic decision questions have higher complexity (e.g., for deterministic automata, the emptiness question for nested weighted automata is PSpacehard, whereas the corresponding complexity for weighted automata is PTime). We consider a natural subclass of nested weighted automata where at any point at most a bounded number k of slave automata can be active. We focus on automata whose master value function is the limit average. We show that these nested weighted automata with bounded width are strictly more expressive than weighted automata (e.g., average response time with no overlapping requests can be expressed with bound k = 1, but not with non-nested weighted automata). We show that the complexity of the basic decision problems (i.e., emptiness and universality) for the subclass with k constant matches the complexity for weighted automata. Moreover, when k is part of the input given in unary we establish PSpace-completeness.

Weighted Automata and Logics for Infinite Nested Words
Nested words introduced by Alur and Madhusudan are used to capture structures with both linear and hierarchical order, e.g. XML documents, without losing valuable closure properties. Furthermore, Alur and Madhusudan introduced automata and equivalent logics for both finite and infinite nested words, thus extending Büchi’s theorem to nested words. Recently, average and discounted computations of...
متن کاملPebble Weighted Automata and Transitive Closure Logics
We introduce new classes of weighted automata on words. Equipped with pebbles and a two-way mechanism, they go beyond the class of recognizable formal power series, but capture a weighted version of first-order logic with bounded transitive closure. In contrast to previous work, this logic allows for unrestricted use of universal quantification. Our main result states that pebble weighted autom...
متن کاملMonitor Logics for Quantitative Monitor Automata
In the last years, there has been increasing interest in quantitative features of the specification and analysis of systems. Such quantitative aspects include the consumption of a certain resource or the output of a benefit. Both weighted automata and weighted logics [7] are means to achieve this quantitative description of systems. They can be employed for both finite and infinite input. Very ...
متن کاملProbabilistic Weighted Automata
Nondeterministic weighted automata are finite automata with numerical weights on transitions. They define quantitative languages L that assign to each word w a real number L(w). The value of an infinite word w is computed as the maximal value of all runs over w, and the value of a run as the maximum, limsup, liminf, limit average, or discounted sum of the transition weights. We introduce probab...
متن کاملFly-Automata, Their Properties and Applications
We address the concrete problem of implementing huge bottom-up term automata. Such automata arise from the verification of Monadic Second Order propositions on graphs of bounded tree-width or clique-width. This applies to graphs of bounded tree-width because bounded tree-width implies bounded clique-width. An automaton which has so many transitions that they cannot be stored in a transition tab...
